THE ROB ROY WAY
The Rob Roy Way is, as previously stated, a long-distance path
that runs for about 77 miles between
Drymen and
Pitlochry. It
passes right through Strathyre. It is a fairly recent path, and
is only marked as a long-distance route on the most up-to-date
Ordnance Survey maps. The map you will need is the Ordnance
Survey Landranger Sheet 57, 'Stirling & The Trossachs', 1:50000
scale or one-and-a-quarter inches to a mile. If you have such a
map, and if it is bang up-to-date, you will see the route marked as a line of small red
diamonds.
You should note that at the time of writing this entry
(2011), the route was hardly marked at all on the ground. There
was no indication whatsoever of where to pick it up in Strathyre,
and as such you will need the above map and you will need to
know how to properly read it.
The section that runs from Strathyre to the
Kings House Hotel at Balquhidder is only around three miles in length, and while
slightly steep in places it should only take you between one and
two hours. The route follows a wide forest track for much of the
time, but it's hard to figure out how to initially get on this
track from Strathyre, and once you've found it there are a few
side roads that will confuse you as to the correct way to go. So
make sure you've got your map, as well as a compass and other
essential hill-walking accessories. I actually think that the
Loch Lomond & The Trossachs National Park authority could do a
lot more to both properly signpost the route and to make it
easier for folk who might like to casually walk a small section.
(I believe that as I type they are working on it.)
