GOOD THINGS TO SEE AND DO IN STRATHYRE
THE ROB ROY WAY
The Rob Roy Way is, as previously stated, a long-distance path that runs for about 77 miles between Drymen and Pitlochry. It passes right through Strathyre. It is a fairly recent path, and is only marked as a long-distance route on the most up-to-date Ordnance Survey maps. The map you will need is the Ordnance Survey Landranger Sheet 57, 'Stirling & The Trossachs', 1:50000 scale or one-and-a-quarter inches to a mile. If you have such a map, and if it is bang up-to-date, you will see the route marked as a line of small red diamonds.
You should note that at the time of writing this entry (2011), the route was hardly marked at all on the ground. There was no indication whatsoever of where to pick it up in Strathyre, and as such you will need the above map and you will need to know how to properly read it.
The section that runs from Strathyre to the Kings House Hotel at Balquhidder is only around three miles in length, and while slightly steep in places it should only take you between one and two hours. The route follows a wide forest track for much of the time, but it's hard to figure out how to initially get on this track from Strathyre, and once you've found it there are a few side roads that will confuse you as to the correct way to go. So make sure you've got your map, as well as a compass and other essential hill-walking accessories. I actually think that the Loch Lomond & The Trossachs National Park authority could do a lot more to both properly signpost the route and to make it easier for folk who might like to casually walk a small section. (I believe that as I type they are working on it.)

Strathyre is very much an outdoor sort of place. There is nothing in the way of what you might term a regular tourist attraction, and all your time in the area will undoubtedly be spent either relaxing amidst the stunningly beautiful scenery or exercising your lungs by walking or cycling or fishing or even ascending mountains, of which there are many. Where paths are concerned, you've got the Rob Roy Way, a long-distance route some 77 miles in length, running from Drymen to Pitlochry. You don't have to walk it all; you could follow a small part of the route, walking for as little as a few hours to a whole day. You've also got the cycle path that runs through Callander, Strathyre and Balquhidder, which joins with the Rob Roy Way in the section sitting on the western banks of Loch Lubnaig. So there are paths and routes all over the place, and whichever one you choose to follow is entirely up to you. Have fun.
