COFFEE & CREAM, 63 HIGH STREET
Coffee & Cream is a small well-established coffee-house with a warm homely feel to it.
They have two soups on each day, and with varieties like 'Lentil, Tomato
and Roast Pepper', 'Broccoli and Stilton', 'Spicy Lentil', 'Carrot and
Courgette', 'Parsnip and Ginger', 'Cauliflower and Broccoli', 'Sweet
Potato and Garlic', 'Chicken Broth' and many others, it's just the place
to go after a visit to Paisley Museum.
ASHTREE HOUSE HOTEL, ORR SQUARE
The observant among you will notice that the Ashtree House Hotel is a hotel, and not a cafe
or coffee house. But it is a small and friendly hotel, one where the
customer care is genuine and not learned parrot-fashion from a course,
and as such I am more than happy to include their tea-room here. They
have two soups on each day, and pride themselves in using only Scottish
ingredients. It's not far from the museum, so maybe you could have a
bowl of 'Bacon & Lentil' or 'Cream of Leek' here, visit the museum, then
have more soup at the Coffee & Cream. I have it on firm authority from
the Director General of Health that having more than one bowl of soup
each day will cause you no harm whatsoever.
PAISLEY ART CENTRE, NEW STREET
There's always a nice smell of food in the Paisley Art Centre cafe, and you generally want to
sit about for longer than is necessary. It just feels good. The building
was once an old church - the Laigh Kirk - and built in 1738. Inside, one
soup, like 'Mushroom' or whatever, is on offer each day.
MACPHEE'S, MAIN STREET, BARRHEAD
Barrhead lies just south of Paisley. MacPhees has been
recommended by soupslurper Kate, and appears to be a fast-food takeaway
sort of place that offers a quite
magnificent range of homemade soups with varieties like, 'Lentil',
'Chicken Broth', 'Pea and Ham', 'Minestrone', 'Potato and Leek', 'Scotch
Broth', 'Yellow Split Pea', 'Chicken and Sweetcorn', 'Chicken and Rice'
(must be a few folk from Ayrshire in the area), along with creamy soups
made with either Broccoli or Tomato or Cauliflower or Mushroom or
Lettuce... now there's a new one on me: 'Cream of Lettuce'... hmm, I'll
have to try that. Thank you to Kate for that comprehensive list.
