THE BULL INN, 7 NEW STREET
Although built in 1901, the interior of this delightful pub feels a heck
of a lot older. There is a lot of old dark wood and a few tiny rooms
with leaded glass windows where one may hide from the world and all its
problems. The atmosphere in The Bull Inn is wonderfully old and musty and conducive to
staying forever.
WEE HOWFF, 53 HIGH STREET
Small panes of glass on a small and simple frontage lead one into the
bowels of this attractive little Paisley howff where the ale is fine and
life is grand. The Wee Howff has appeared in the Campaign For Real Ale's Good Beer Guide
for at least twenty years, so don't let appearances put you off.
This is a good pub
FOX AND HOUNDS, SOUTH STREET, HOUSTON
Houston's a tiny village with nothing but a few houses and a couple of
pubs. It sits around 6 miles NW-ish (which is the technical term for a bit
to the left then a wee bit up) of Paisley, and a very short journey on a
bus. Inside, the Fox and Hounds is typical in style to the good quality
pubs you often find in England but whose presence seems to be all too
often lacking up here in Scotland, unless you know where to look. Look
no further. This is a gem. Inside there is a warm old-world atmosphere
that makes it very difficult to leave. As well as the bar and a quite
excellent restaurant there is also a small brewery, and you can watch
the ale being brewed through a window in the Fox and Vixen Bar. The
Houston Brewing Company brew a range of very tasty ales, and if there's
no more room in your tummy you may visit the Brewery Shop and take some
away for later.
