THE COMPASS, QUEEN CHARLOTTE STREET
The Compass is a modern corner bar in an old building on Leith's Constitution Street. As well
as foreign lagers there are some pretty original soups, like 'Asparagus
and White Onion'.
ROCKSALT CAFE DELI, CONSTITUTION STREET
A modern cafe in an old premises. There are remnants of the
previous life of the interior, like some wonderful plaster cornicing and
a humungous chandelier. One or two soups each day, like 'Tomato and
Basil'.
RELISH, 6 COMMERCIAL STREET
This is one of those little food shops that smell great as soon as you
walk in. The counters of this Leith palace are overflowing with freshly
baked goodies, and the soups are out of this world. On the day I made my
visit they had 'Butternut Squash and Parmesan' (heavenly). Other
varieties include 'Lentil' and 'Sweet Potato, Coconut and Chilli,' which
must score 10 out of 10 for originality. You know, places like this are
worth their weight in gold. The owners have to be applauded for bringing
together so many wonderful edible delights in the one space. Relish make and serve what is
without doubt the Best Soup in Edinburgh, and a real contender for the
Best Soup in Scotland. Superb.
