WHERE TO FIND GOOD ALE IN LEITH'S BEST PUBS
HENRY HALL'S, 42 BERNARD STREET
The full and proper title is Henry Hall's Carriers Quarters. This is the pub with the teensy-weensy room. It is said to be 'Leith's Oldest Unaltered Public House,' dating to 1785. The small room may at one time have been a snug with its own door from the street and access to service at the bar via a hatch, as used by women, who may not have had access to the main bar at all. (I mean, let's face it, let a woman into a bar and she instinctively wants to start polishing things. You wouldn't be able to relax for the glare!) There are a couple of real ales, and many foreign lagers on draught.
THE KING'S WARK, SHORE
The King's Wark is a seriously old building with the pub on ground level and overlooking Leith harbour. A few real ales available, as well as food.
MALT & HOPS, SHORE
Although the pub is built into a building dating to 1912, it feels an awful lot older and is very cosy. There's a good selection of real ales, along with a real fire. Malt & Hops is a great place.
TEUCHTERS LANDING, 1c DOCK PLACE
Sometimes you just know when you're in the best pub in the district. And this is it. Inside Teuchters Landing it is tremendously cosy, with old dark wood, low levels of lighting, and a number of small rooms to hide and relax in. The interior has something of a nautical theme to it, which is quite apt given that it sits right at Leith's water's edge. They usually have ales from the Inveralmond Brewery up in Perth, and I would highly recommend 'Ossian's Ale'. They also have a massive selection of whiskies and good wines. I might also add that in the Gents they have real taps in the sinks (not those press-for-a-nano-second's-worth-of-water jobs), nice scented soap, and a hand-dryer that will blow you away if you're not braced against something solid. Stupid name aside, this is an exceptional pub.
