WHERE TO FIND GOOD SOUP IN KILWINNING
WHISPERS CAFE, 23 ALMWALL ROAD
An okayish warm cafe in a grim and quite horrid modern building. The soup that will be available on the day of your visit will depend on what day it is. If it's Thursday it will be 'Broth', and if it's Friday it will be 'Lentil'. These two soups - the only two soups made in Whispers - seem to alternate throughout the week. I am tempted to think that the word 'vegetable' has perhaps not yet reached Kilwinning. But at 95p (2011 price), who's complaining?
NEXT DOOR COFFEE SHOP, MAIN STREET
Another fairly basic yet homely coffee shop, this time in an old cottage on the main street. The predominant sound on entering is that of a heck of a lot of elderly ladies all saying, 'Aye', 'Aye', 'Aye'. There are usually two soups on, like 'Lentil' or 'Chicken and Rice,' the latter a favourite Ayrshire soup and recommended to me by one of the ladies. All in all, Next Door's no' bad.
TOURNAMENT CAFE, EGLINTON COUNTRY PARK
A clean and well-ordered cafe that seems to shut around winter. They make soup and offer two varieties each day for you to slurp, like 'Lentil' or 'Chicken Noodle'. The Tournament Cafe is beside Eglinton Country Park's Visitor Centre, in a most pleasant section of the park that boasts a Gardens Walk and other green bits and bobs. The park sits a mere mile or two south-east of the railway station, off the A737 road.
COFFEE ROOM, DALGARVEN MILL
Dalgarven Mill is an ancient structure that sits in a beautiful little dell by the River Garnock, about a mile or two north of the railway station in Kilwinning, just off the A737 road. It has an excellent coffee room, very old and atmospheric with bumpy stone walls that once rumbled and shook, and still do from time to time. Generally two soups each day, like 'Lentil' or 'Carrot and Sweet Potato'. (Closed on Mondays.)
