SOUTHERN CROSS CAFE, 63a COCKBURN STREET
Located just down from the Royal Mile, the Southern Cross Cafe is a good cafe. For
one, they have a real fire, which in itself marks the place out as very
very special. Inside, it is modern and atmospheric, with nooks and
crannies, balconies and an iron spiral stair. Usually one soup on each
day, like, 'Tomato' or 'Butternut Squash with Coconut.' A real gem.
ALWAYS SUNDAY, 170 HIGH STREET
A bright and exceedingly cosy place on Edinburgh's Royal Mile.
Soups on offer could be 'Yellow Split Pea' or 'Chunky Vegetable and
Tomato' or whatever. A good place to hide from the tourist hustle and
bustle, and as it's Always Sunday, you can just sit around not doing a
great deal except slurping soup.
DEACONS HOUSE CAFE, BRODIE'S CLOSE
The Deacons House Cafe is an old atmospheric place up a dim arched pend near the top of the Royal
Mile. The soups are very traditional or, as one visitor said, 'like
Granny used to make'. Soup of the day could be 'Carrot' or 'Scotch
Broth' or 'Pea' or 'Potato' or 'Mushroom' or whatever. Lilian, a visitor
who stays beyond Scotland's borders (you see, there
are other
people out there!), had this to say: 'It's small and cosy and it also
has wonderful sandwiches and desserts we remembered from our childhood
days.'

UNION OF GENIUS, 8 FORREST ROAD
Something very very special here folks. I haven't visited it
yet, but I'm very much looking forward to doing so. Union of
Genius proclaims itself as 'Scotland's First Soup Cafe'. Each
day they make and serve up to six soups, all 'flavour-matched
with locally-baked artisan breads.' They even have an all-day
breakfast soup. As well as a great emphasis on the use of local
ingredients, they actually serve some of their soup in edible
crockery in the form of bread soup bowls. Crikey - that's gorra
save on the washing-up, as well as being novel and
unquestionably tasty. Union of Genius is located in Edinburgh's
Old Town, not far from the National Museum of Scotland. With
soups like 'Chorizo, Tomato and Butterbean', I simply cannot
wait to get there.
