YOU KNOW YOU'RE IN TROUBLE WHEN YOU WANDER INTO A BAR TO ASK IF THEY
HAVE ANY REAL ALE AND THE BARMAID FLICKERS HER LONG EYELASHES AND SAYS
SHE DOESN'T KNOW WHAT REAL ALE IS. (OH FOR GOODNESS SAKE, HOW MANY TIMES
HAVE I GOT TO GO OVER THIS - REAL ALE IS MADE BY THE ELVES, WHILE KEG
BEER IS MADE BY GOBLINS. HAVE YOU GOT IT NOW? SHEESHT!) THIS SMALL AND
DISAPPOINTING HUMAN EXCHANGE OF WORDS ACTUALLY SUMS UP THE ALE SITUATION
IN DUNOON. THERE ISNY ANY. LISTEN GUYS, YOU'VE GOT A FAIRLY LOCAL
BREWERY JUST UP THE ROAD FROM DUNOON AT CAIRNDOW. FYNE ALES BREW SOME GOOD ALE. GET
THEM TO MAKE YOU SOME SPECIAL 'MORAG'S GLEN ALE' OR SOMETHING BECAUSE,
AT THE END OF THE DAY, TOURISTS LIKE TO EAT AND DRINK LOCAL THINGS. NOT
ONLY WOULD YOU BE HELPING TO SAVE THE PLANET, YOU'D BE KEEPING VISITORS
MORE THAN HAPPY. SURELY MAKES SENSE?
THE LORNE BAR, 249 ARGYLL STREET
Although there was no real ale when I paid the Lorne Bar a visit, there
was a pump-clip to excite then disappoint. This basic Dunoon howf has the potential to be an
exceedingly fine bar. It is traditional in form with a simple
cottage-like layout and lots of dark wood. But most important of all:
they have a real log fire in the bar, and that is something you just
cannot beat. If nothing else, it's a good place to go for a heat in
winter.
MacCLURES BAR, 2 FERRY BRAE
Not sure if there should be an apostrophe in there. It might be just one
MacClure, or there could be a whole clan of them, all with a share, and
all holding weekly meetings to discuss exactly where that apostrophe
should go. Although no real ale on draught, they did have bottles of
Deuchar's IPA. It's a start. Bottles have a longer shelf-life, so if
you're not sure how the ale's going to go then it's an alternative
option to draught. Personally, I'd like to see local Fyne Ale in there.
MacClures is a pretty basic bar, but has some curious plasterwork on the
ceiling depicting pan-pipe-playing cherubs. What exactly they are doing
on the ceiling, I'm not entirely sure, unless they have a bit of fun by peeing into your beer when you're not looking.
