KATIE'S TEAROOM, BIRNAM
It's a short and most enjoyable walk of only a mile from Dunkeld Railway
Station, at Birnam, to Dunkeld itself. When I look at a map I also
see some place called Little Dunkeld, and I am unsure where Birnam stops
and Little Dunkeld begins, then ends and turns into Dunkeld. I'm not
even sure that it matters. I imagine that Little Dunkeld is where the
little people live, the Picts and their hobbit-like descendants. If you
can't wait to throw soup down your throat then Katie's Tearoom is just
outside Birnam, beside a garage. It's a plain sort of place with a
homely interior, and as well as all-day breakfasts and that sort of
thing you can slurp 'Leek and Potato' or 'Yellow Split Pea' soups.
THE SCOTTISH DELI, 1 ATHOLL STREET, DUNKELD
This delicatessen is impressively similar to their only other branch in
Pitlochry. It is a gastronomic gem, with great emphasis on the use of
local produce. They have the same soup and sandwich range as their other
branch, in addition to a table where you may rest your bones and slurp
stuff like, 'Butterbean, Rosemary and Isle of Mull Cheddar' soup. As
well as a whole host of interesting Scottish foodstuff, they have
bottles of Scottish cider - made from Scottish apples - and a plethora
of wondrous things that you will want to take away and eat. A million
out of ten for The Scottish Deli.
PALMERSTON'S COFFEE SHOP, 20 ATHOLL STREET
Palmerston's is an excellent coffee house with a good emphasis on
the use of local produce. It is small and homely inside, with
mountains of home-baked bits and bobs like jams and chutneys, as
well as local honey. There's one soup on each day, like 'Carrot,
Potato, and Turnip.' When I was there they had an advert in the
window. It read, 'WANTED - RHUBARB'. I mean, that's exactly the
spirit we want to see. You bring stuff that grows in your garden
and they magically transform it into an edible delicacy. Superb.
