A LITTLE WALK - THE HERMITAGE
This has been a popular short jaunt with tourists for many years. It's a
woodland walk by a river, and there's an old bridge and a picturesque
folly towering over a gargling waterfall. When you look at your
map (Ordnance Survey Landranger series, 1:50000
scale or one-and-a-quarter-inches to a mile, sheet 52, 'Pitlochry to
Crieff'), it's hard to know exactly how to reach The Hermitage as there
are too many confused lines. Basically, it's about a mile-and-a-half
south-west (below and a bit to the left) of Dunkeld. If you leave
Dunkeld by the bridge, then you'll come to a junction with a road
(A9(T)). Just before that junction on the right is a small narrow road.
This is the one you should follow to reach The Hermitage.
HERITAGE TRAIL
When you first arrive in Dunkeld go straight to the Tourist Information
Office at the foot of the High Street, and pick up a Heritage Trail
leaflet showing places of interest. It was just a photocopied job when I
was there, but that's all you need. You can follow it and see things
like Bakehouse Cottage, the Old Smiddy, Stanley Hill (where the faerie's
live), The Magazine, The Fountain, and The Ell House. The latter is
quite interesting, as long long ago, letters of the alphabet were all
kept in different locations in a town. The 'A's might be kept in one
particular house, and the 'B's somewhere else. The Ell House is, of
course, where the 'L's were kept. It's a National Trust For Scotland
property. Go there and ask them to confirm my story. You'll see it's
true.
DUNKELD CATHEDRAL
This is a bit ruinous, but that's okay. Nothing wrong with ruins. Ruins
at least leave much to the imagination, some upvc double glazing in that
big gothic arch, a nice flat screen TV by yon altery thing, and such
like. In the restored choir there are audio handsets, but I didn't try
them as the choir doesn't look that interesting. I think the main thing
about Dunkeld Cathedral is that the grounds around it are beautiful. You can
sit on a seat by the River Tay and recharge all those spent batteries. A
lovely peaceful space.
