THE PARROT CAFE, 91 PERTH ROAD
This cafe sits on the same main road that a lot of other good stuff sits
on, like Mennie's pub and the Deep Sea Restaurant. Perth Road cuts
through Dundee's West End, and offers an eclectic mix of
interesting wee shops that keep students from the nearby
university fed and watered and generally entertained in one way
or another. The Parrot Cafe is a modern
snug place with a coal-effect gas fire to warm your outside while the
soup warms your core. There are usually two soups, like, 'Ham and
Lentil' or 'Butterbean Broth', both taken from a range of about a dozen
vegetable varieties and a few containing meat.
TARTAN COFFEE HOUSE, 53 PERTH ROAD
Another cosy coffee house, this time with a studenty feel to it. Usually one soup
per day, like 'Vegetable' (a title that I find strangely irritating,
although I suppose if there are a lot of vegetables in a soup it would
be quite impractical to name them all) or 'Chicken Broth'. It smells
good when you first walk in, which I always think is a good sign. The
small area through the back of the Tartan Coffee House has sofas
for some serious relaxation.
LILY AND STONE, 11 UNION STREET
The Lily and Stone coffee shop used to be Taste Fresh, but it
has now changed hands. It remains a very agreeable soup-slurping
emporium, where varieties like 'Parsnip, Apple and Coriander'
can be slurped. Lily and Stone's soups are always vegetarian,
and around 90% of the time they are also vegan. They have a few
more tables and seats than there used to be, and proclaim to be
'more than a coffee shop,' which they most certainly are. You're
not going to know just how much more until you try their soup,
which I would recommend that you do.
ROSEANGLE CAFE ARTS, 130-132 PERTH ROAD
Their full title is probably Roseangle Cafe Arts at the Bridge,
which is a bit of a mouthful. The cafe is under Dundee West
Church, with an entrance from the cobbled road called Roseangle.
It is, of course, as the name suggests, not just a cafe, and
there is usually always an art exhibition on. When I was there
it was a photographic exhibition, and it looked like a good one
to me. The Roseangle Cafe Arts is, let me tell you, a lovely
place. I almost passed it by. I had this strange vision in my
head of a cafe in a church where poor people sipped tea and
prayed and occasionally leapt up off their seat with cries of
'Praise the Lord!' But no, this is a first class cafe. It's
small and quiet and very homely, and as well as a few tables
there's a nice soft sofa thing to sink into and dream. There
were two soups at my visit: 'Beans and Greens' and 'Carrot and
Coriander'. Roseangle Cafe Arts is in fact so good that I have
been torn between awarding it either two or three hippos. It's
almost three, but not quite. If I had half hippos it would
probably have a two-and-a-half hippos rating, but the thing
about hippos is it's nigh impossible to find a saw big enough to
cut one in two. [NOTE - Only opens Monday to Friday. Closed at
weekends.]
T ANN CAKE, 27 EXCHANGE STREET
I somehow missed T Anne Cake when in Dundee, and with a name
like that I wish I hadn't. It looks like a really good place,
although I appreciate that where marketing campaigns are
concerned, the phrase 'A Good Place' might not necessarily have
folk flocking to your door. But what might get you
flocking to the fine door of T Ann Cake is the quality of the
edibles goodies on offer within. A little peek at a blackboard
on a blog reveals soups like 'Butternut Squash Dhal' or 'Sweet
Potato and Orange'. It irks me somewhat that I seem to be
constantly missing some good places. Don't make the same mistake
as me. Head direct to T Ann Cake without delay.
