THE SPEEDWELL BAR, 165-167 PERTH ROAD
It might feel like a small trek to get here, but I can tell you
right now that even if you had to swim seas, fend off crocodiles
and eat maggots, it would still be worth it. For this is a
stupendous public house. So stupendous is The Speedwell Bar that it is listed in CAMRA's (the Campaign
For Real Ale) Inventory of Heritage Pubs. Inside is a perfectly
preserved Edwardian interior - everything from small screens at the bar
so you don't have to speak to whoever's sitting beside you (it could be
the guy who knows all about jute!) to a glorious wooden counter and all
manner of old bits and bobs. Mrs Mennie was a previous owner, hence the reason
it is still sometimes known as Mennies. And, once you've slaked your
thirst with Scottish ale or tall glasses of bubbling frothing cloudy
foreign ale, the walk back to Dundee city centre is made all the more palatable
by the presence of a good fish and chip shop (The Deep Sea Restaurant, Nethergate - receive your goodies through a small serving hatch).
PHOENIX, 103 NETHERGATE
A dim, atmospheric pub full of old wood and cosy corners. It's
not far from Mennies or the Deep Sea Restaurant, and is a real haven
from the busy road just outside. Good range of real ales available.
