GOOD THINGS TO SEE AND DO IN BO'NESS
SCOTTISH RAILWAY EXHIBITION, UNION STREET
A couple of sheds full of old trains and wagons and photographs along with every bit of kit that once came together to make our railways. If you look real hard there's a black and white photograph of the old ticket office in Edinburgh's Waverley Railway Station. Sitting in the middle of a stunning decorated floor, under a stupendous dome of glass, it is an absolute feast of magnificence, looking not so much like a ticket office as the great hall of a royal palace. The intricately carved wooden exterior with its small ticket windows was a statement. It said, 'You're now in Edinburgh, the capital city of Scotland, and we're more than happy to see you.' Sadly, it was demolished, and in its place is a modern coffee house that blends with its surroundings in the same way that a cartwheel penny would in a gold bullion vault.
BO'NESS & KINNEIL RAILWAY, UNION STREET
You can take a journey on an old train here, and sometimes it's even an old steam train - you know, one that whooshes and squeals and gives off great billows of steam. It's a short but glorious journey that takes you to the Birkhill Fireclay Mine.
BIRKHILL FIRECLAY MINE
Guides lead you into this old fireclay mine where you learn about yet another of the lost industries of Bo'ness, and of Scotland.
FORESHORE WALKS
Between the railway line and the River Forth are a few paths that offer great views over the river. It's hard to imagine as you stroll around, that Bo'ness was at one time the second largest port in Scotland.
