WHERE TO FIND GOOD ALE IN BO'NESS'S BEST PUBS
RIVERVIEW, 16 CHURCH WYND
This is uphill from the shore, which is a good thing, because the thing about hills is that not only do they offer views, but they can also induce a drouth, and when you've got a drouth there's only one thing you can do with it... go to the pub and drink ale! The Riverview is a pretty basic bar that tries hard to appear better than it is. The interior is stark, tired, and uninspiring. They have real ale but, to be honest, I'm not convinced that it's worth the effort to get there.
ANCHOR TAVERN, NORTH STREET
This is a typical working man's pub with a tradition of domino-playing. They have bottles of ale, but the last time I was in I could see nothing that looked local. Still, it's a start. The Anchor Tavern is an honest and friendly Bo'ness pub where the regulars will look after you and make you welcome. The exterior is architecturally pleasing. The interior feels snug, with a few nice pub mirrors, like a couple promoting Pale Ale from the vanished Ushers Brewery in Edinburgh. There used to be a very pleasant small room off the main bar area where you could relax and hide, but they have knocked down a wall to make the bar area bigger, and the snug is no more. Kinda sad, if you ask me. There is a small secluded area near the back of the bar which you can hide in if you so choose.
BO'NESS ANNUAL REAL ALE FESTIVAL
I have fond memories of sitting inside an old steam train at Bo'ness many years ago drinking real ale that was so delicious that my contented purring was almost as loud as the steam engine. Each year there is a real ale festival in the town, and while steam trains are no longer involved, you can bet that a tremendous day will be on the cards.
