 WHERE TO FIND GOOD ALE IN ANSTRUTHER'S BEST PUBS
SHIP TAVERN, 49 SHORE STREET
This is one of those small bars where as soon as you swing open the doors to enter everyone inside swivels in their chair and looks at you with an expression that suggests they reckon you've just dug your way out of the ground in the local graveyard. It's a look that, quite frankly, makes you want to turn right around and leave. Anyway, as I'd just stepped inside after a battle with stormy winds down at the harbour, a battle that saw what little hair I have form strange sideways shapes, it is a look that may, under the circumstances, be understandable. The real ale that was on when I was there was 'Reaper Ale', as brewed somewhere in the world, and named after an old herring drifter. I think the thing to do when entering this bar, so as to break the ice, would be to stagger in with your arms out in front, perhaps with dods of earth and mud liberally applied to various parts of your face and body, and give a low groan along the lines of, 'Ehhuurrrghhshwwagh.' That would, at least, give them something to really look at, and would have the added bonus of a seat when the bar was full.
DREEL TAVERN, 16 HIGH STREET
The Dreel Tavern is located on a busy yet picturesque main road lined with a veritable rainbow of coloured houses, right beside the Dreel Burn and a walkway titled the Dreelside Walk. If you're in any doubt about just how old and historic the immediate area is, then the plaque on the frontage soon sets things straight. It reads, 'James V 1513-1542 travelled incognito through Fife as the 'Guid Man O' Ballengiech', coming to the Dreel Burn and fearful of wetting his hose, he was carried across at this point by a stout Gaberlunzie woman, who was rewarded with the King's purse.' Inside, the Dreel Tavern is an ancient gem. It has a very very low ceiling, so for goodness sake mind your head. It is dim and intriguing with old stone and wood and an atmosphere of times gone by. They have real ale and a real fire and, to be perfectly honest, it is a place that I could very easily stay in until the cows come home (when is that again?). To give an idea of the level of hospitality to be found within, I popped in merely for a look and was offered a small sample of 'Duncan's IPA', named after Ken Duncan, the Head Brewer at the Inveralmond Brewery in Perth. It was a seriously fine ale, hoppy - but not too bitter - with an exceedingly tasty but not overpowering fruity flavour. It was GOOOD!
